Enjoy Bordeaux from top estates at a fraction of the cost, just as locals do in France. Second label Bordeaux is one of France’s best kept secrets.
Since the 18th century, second label wines were the ones kept for the family, and are generally made with grapes from the same vineyards that produce grand crus, but use the younger vines. These wines are meant to be enjoyed at their release, and peak at six to eight years. Millesima features these second labels online and in their flagship store on the upper east side in NYC, seen in the photos.
Two wines stood out at our tasting. Domaine de Chevalier, L’Esprit de Chevalier Blanc 2011 comes from Pessac-Léognan, an area celebrated for both red and white wines, which is surrounded and protected by forests. Even though this bottle is considered second label, it is lovingly cared for and aged to create a unique, complex, floral white that is fresh and fruity. $32. Château Nénin, La Fugue de Nenin 2002 is a red blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, and is absolutely silky on the tongue. $36. millesima-usa.com
