NOT YOUR AVERAGE FOODIE SITE
Our recipes have been developed with entertaining in mind. We pride ourselves on choosing organic and high quality ingredients. Flavorful and out-of-the-ordinary combinations are featured throughout the site—with a nod to elegant and simple plating. Wherever possible, we choose to serve one-bite morsels, thereby eliminating wasteful plastic, which also allow guests to circulate and graze as the party goes on.
OUR FOUNDER AND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Ellen Swandiak is known for throwing fun theme parties—memorable not only for their clever culinary twists, but also for their artful displays and often spirited guest antics. This knack for throwing parties got her a column in Organic Spa Magazine, HIP HOSTESS, which offered an organic twist to party advice, and spawned the birth of her blog: HipHostessNYC.blogspot.com. As an Art Director, her work can be seen in a range of cookbooks from the practical Rachael Ray to esteemed chef and restauranteur Jose Garces. Her career includes the design and launch of a myriad of magazines, many in the cooking, lifestyle, and spa categories.
IT’S IN THE GENES
Growing up in an immigrant Slovak family, Ellen Swandiak experienced entertaining as a natural part of life. The Swandiaks always had people over and supplied enough food and drink for an army. Patriarch, Steve Swandiak, was an accomplished and enthusiastic cook—famous for offering a taste of his latest creation. He would approach guests, spoon in hand, shouting, “Best in the West!” They had no choice but to open their mouths and give it a try. His joy and charismatic ways live on after him. Ellen’s mom, Emily, was his sous chef, and love of his life, who makes sure that visitors always have something to nibble on and sip.
With this as her core, Ellen has made it her mission to spread the word on hosting finesse and keeping it real.
A WORD OF THANKS
“I want to take this opportunity to say thanks to my father, Steve Swandiak —for teaching me to appreciate the simple things in life, like the fresh veggies grown in our garden in Upstate New York, for showing me how to conserve and when to splurge, and most of all, for paving the way in the art of making guests feel welcome.”
